Guide of Deià, Mallorca

Deià is a small municipality and a coastal village in the Serra de Tramuntana, which creates the northern ridge of the Spanish island of Majorca. It is located about 16 kilometers (10 mi) north of Valldemossa, and it is known for its literary and musical residents. Its idyllic landscape, orange trees and olive groves on steep cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean, attracted German, English and American expatriates after the First World War.

The English poet, novelist and scholar Robert Graves was one of the first foreigners to settle in the village, where he collaborated with Laura Riding in the creation of the Seizin Press. Graves returned after the war and stayed in Deià until his death. He used the city as a backdrop for many of his stories, including the historical novel Hercules my Shipmate. His house is now a museum open to visitors.

Today, this small coastal village, on the northwest coast of Mallorca, is one of the most beautiful villages on the island. Perched in a ravine at the foot of the Teix mountain, with views of the Mediterranean below, Deià has long attracted artists, writers and other famous creators. As one of the most populated areas of the Serra de Tramuntana, Deià is part of a landscape rewarded with World Heritage Site status for the way in which nature, culture and traditions merge triumphantly.

VIDEO GUIDE OF DEIÀ

Today the village is still a city of artists with a number of art galleries and gift shops, as well as a good selection of restaurants, while controlled urban expansion has allowed this small village to retain its traditional beauty and charm. Now it's on every tourist route as a great example of `the other Mallorca ' and it has even become a popular haunt for the wealthy and famous, including visitors like Richard Branson, Princess Diana, Bob Geldof and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Foreign residents, who represent half of its population, are certainly of the wealthy type, which is evident in the average price of housing for the municipality. These expatriates not only respect but immerse themselves in the traditional Mallorcan life created and preserved by the inhabitants of the region.

HISTORY OF DEIÀ

After the Christian conquest, Deià was awarded to the Count of Rosselló and became a part of Valldemossa. This fact is documented in the chronicle of the distribution of the lands of Majorca between King Jaume I and the nobles who participated in the conquest, and reproduced in the bookcalled "Notes for the history of Deià": The towns of Valldemossa and Deià created a single municipality until the year 1583. The inhabitants of Deià retained a certain autonomy from Valldemossa thanks to the donation that the noble "Nunyo Sans comte del Rosselló" offered to the "Monestir de Santa Maria de la Real "(which is today the Monastery of San Bernardo de la Real, in Palma.) Part of the farm" HADDAYAN "(which was the original name of Deià), was under the jurisdiction of the abbot of the monastery When the mayor of Valldemossa had to administer justice in this territory, the Abbot would address his complaints to the Governor of Majorca. Both claimed their rights on the small farm ". The Cistercian monasteries of Deià date from 1239: Ca l'Abat, which retains the symbols that adorn the real Deià shield; Son Rul·lan and next to Miramar, where the philosopher Ramón Llull founded a missionary school.

WHERE TO STAY

Hotels are becoming increasingly difficult to book in Deià, but there are many excellent Airbnbs to choose from. Think rustic with spacious terraces overlooking the mountains, traditional Spanish interiors, firm-style kitchens and many stone and wooden features. If you are looking for a pool, there are plenty of fincas close to all the best restaurants and at a fraction of the price of hotels.

Belmond La Residencia

At the other end of the scale, you will find ultimate luxury at La Residencia; Formerly owned by Richard Branson, it is now a Belmond hotel and known as the best place to stay in the area. Housed in two stone mansions, the hotel has a modern rustic aesthetic with original details. If you can get away from the tranquil pool facing the mountain, there are two restaurants and a bar to explore. El Olivio is very famous as one of the best restaurants in Mallorca; if romance is the order of the day, the tasting menu of executive chef Guillermo Méndez will be up to par. With decadent bathrooms, pop-up TVs and private terrace jacuzzis, everything is organized for pure relaxation. And we would not want it to be otherwise. Check out the hotel website here.

Es Moli Deià

Another popular hotel on the other side of town is Es Moli, located in a 17th-century mansion that offers 87 rooms decorated in a traditional Mallorcan style. It has everything you need for a relaxing vacation on the island, including a tennis center, a large swimming pool, restaurants, bars and evening shows. One feature that sets it apart from the crowd is its own rocky cove in the park. See the website here https://esmoli.com/en/

WHERE TO EAT

Ca’s Patro March Restaurant

A popular waterfront restaurant for many years, Ca's Patro March - perched on the rocky side of Cala Deià in the Tramuntana Mountains of Majorca - has always been a place where you could spot someone famous in lunch train (or dinner in July and August). In 2016, its popularity skyrocketed, thanks to a television thriller.

Ca’s Patro March was the scene of some scenes from the internationally renowned miniseries "The Night Manager", based on John Le Carré's book and widely shot in Mallorca. The drama of the false abduction attempt was not all that fascinated the viewers: suddenly, everyone wanted to eat in this idyllic place on the edge of the crystal clear Mediterranean.

On the screen and in the photos, this place seems quite distant, but it is not difficult to reach. You can arrive by boat, then climb the stone steps to the restaurant, or descend to Cala Deià, parking about five minutes' walk from the restaurant. If you want to win your lunch, go down from the village of Deià, which takes about 30 minutes.

This rustic seasonal restaurant is nothing special, but you come here for the location and the excellent fresh fish and shellfish caught during the day. The furniture is simple and the "roof" above your head wouldn't prevent a sudden downpour, but no matter when the seafood and location are so appealing?

If fish is not your favorite type of food, the menu includes meat dishes. The wines include labels from Mallorca. The prices are high: you pay for the location, the quality of the seafood and to eat in one of the hottest filming locations on the island.

Restaurant Nama

Since its opening in 2016, the Nama restaurant has offered ingenious combinations from Asian cuisine - notably Thai - in an incredibly chic and comfortable setting. With different portion sizes, from tapas to fresh plates and main dishes, you can prepare your meal as you wish. Think fresh lobster wontons in soy sauce, hot Thai green curry and scallops loaded with spicy fish ceviche. Vegans, forget about a token dish - here you have a lot of options. The terrace opens onto the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range and the sea and the colorful hanging lanterns float from side to side with the wind. The sign of a truly exceptional restaurant? Nama staff love their work; this is evident from the way they welcome you in the recommendations they make. A refined and atmospheric place where the food is incredibly good.

Xelini

Do like the locals and stroll in one of the flowered terraces of Xelini. With ivy canopies and a direct view of the mountain landscape of Mallorca, the setting is idyllic - but you came here to eat, and this place offers. A wide menu of traditional Spanish tapas offers many options, trays of dried mountain ham with a side of fresh bread manchego, fish dishes and more tasty vegetarian dishes like patatas bravas. As for wine, Xelini offers a solid selection of local grape varieties, so take advantage. On weekend evenings, expect live music, a lively atmosphere, and unparalleled views.

Es Raco d’Es Teix

It would be criminal not to aim for a Michelin star dinner at least once. With a star to his name and an incredible terrace, Es Raco d'es Teix is quite special. Designed by Josef Sauerschell and Leonor Payeras, this family-run establishment is located on two floors in a stone house typical of the farming village, adding to its rustic atmosphere. Expect complex dishes from classic cuisine and steeped in modern techniques. Sauerschell focuses on meat like the Mallorcan suckling pig, so this menu can be a welcome break from all the seafood you've probably eaten. A dedicated sommelier is at your disposal to help you choose the best wines to accompany your meal, highlighting a different Mallorcan vineyard each month. If you ask us our recommendation would be the four or six course tasting menu at 72-100 €.

THINGS TO DO

Cala de Deià

If you're on the fence, dream images of Cala de Deià will immediately confirm your vacation booking - and luckily the sapphire blue waters, spectacular cliffs and beach huts are as perfect in reality as ostensibly. pixels. A particularly large rock in the sea is the focal point, with children and adults jumping from its summit into the sea and bathers cheering on the more nervous of them. The old-school atmosphere is brought home by snorkelers paddling around the rock pools and the chic disposition of Celine-clad swimmers, tactically positioned on the stone beach (no sand here). To get most out of cala, invest in a lilo as a smooth base for your towel. This is a great initiative to avoid the bruises and cuts that are partying on this beach. Be prepared for the 25-minute hike from Deia, too: coaches are advised. Wild, unembellished glamor is what you are looking for, however, and Cala de Deià is worth every scratch. Better on a Saturday evening, when the neighboring Ca's Patro mounts its loudspeakers and the music resounds in the creek as the sun begins its descent.

Galleries and ateliers

Deià is famous where artists, literary and bohemians will escape. As a result, the village is filled with small independent galleries and workshops, although larger establishments like Hotel La Residencia often host exhibitions. Meander from the main street, around the winding road that leads to the church at the top of Deià and, along the way, you will come across these largely unexpected artistic spaces. Pottery, paintings and vases are usually found alongside jewelry in bright colors of gold and turquoise. Ceramica Joanna, located on Es Porxo, is the finest of the lot. Inside the small workshop, you will find Joanna, or one of its creators, painting lemons, oranges, olives or figs on large dishes, bowls and jugs. Each piece celebrates the vibrant fruits which are local specialties; a welcome injection of color into your home. The team will also make sure that your purchase is packaged well enough to survive in your hand luggage.

Yacht Charter, Mezzo Magic

If you splash out on one activity, let it be Mezzo Magic. The private British yacht is based in Port de Soller, the next town along Deià, which is accessible by bus, car and bicycle. You can become private, but we suggest that you subscribe to a group charter for which you will pay around € 75 / head for half a day, € 120 for a day or € 50 for a sunset. The skipper sets sail, taking you to different coves such as Sa Fordada and Cala de Deià, where you can dive, dive and paddleboard. At sea, local knowledge is unmatched, so you can safely do things that you couldn't have done otherwise. Consider swinging from a swing rope near Smuggler’s Cove and diving into a secret cave, where bright rays of light illuminate swirls of rock and fish floating at the bottom. The skipper will provide you with as much cava, wine and beer as you want (for safety reasons) and, who knows, you might get along so well with your charter colleagues that you will then head for drinks together. The evening of live jazz and food truck on Thursday in Port de Soller is a must (and unheard of for tourists).

Biking and Hiking

The best way to enjoy the vast mountains and the endless sea is by bicycle or hiking. Mallorca's roads are perfectly smooth, which, along with the mountains, explains why professional cyclists choose to train here. Equip Deia is managed by the Reynés family - including two ex-cyclists - and offers a bicycle rental service. For a reasonable price, they will equip you with a bike, a helmet and a repair kit, and give you all the route advice you need before leaving. If biking isn't your thing, sign up for one of their guided hikes. The surrounding mountains offer incredible hiking opportunities, but are best when led by professionals. If you prefer to go alone, one of the most popular and simplest trails goes from la cala to Soller. The two and a half hour hike takes you through the mountains, with a breathtaking view of the sea which is best at sunset.

Visit to Robert Graves

A visit to Robert Graves' old house should be on your to-do list if you are visiting Deià. The house will transport you back in time to the time he lived there because it retains the atmosphere it had when Graves was at the height of his creativity. It is filled with personal belongings, including a crowded guest book. The gardens are also worth a visit, filled with orange, olive, lemon and almond trees. If you are a fan of Robert Graves, walk in Carrer es Puig, the only real street in Deià, passing by the ceramic cross stations, to reach the parish church of San Juan Bautista from the 15th century and you will find the small cemetery where Graves is buried. His tombstone, like many others, is inscribed in a simple handwriting inserted in the drying concrete - "Robert Graves, Poeta, 1895-1985". If you want to know more, read "Wild Olives - Life in Mallorca with Robert Graves" by his son William Graves.

Archaeological museum

There is an archaeological museum, Es Clot, which was founded by Dr William H Waldren and is located in an old mill. The exhibits contain examples of the findings from important local sites on the island, such as the Son Mullet caves, remains of "myotragus" (mountain goat, now extinct).

Arts and Crafts

The luxurious Belmond La Residencia hotel welcomes visitors to its intimate gallery called Sa Tafona. Here you can admire the works of the cherished artists Joan Miró, David Templeton and Arturo Rhodes who spent time in Mallorca. The exhibitions change every month and the opening evenings are a great social occasion. If you're looking for a takeout gift from Deià, Ceramics by Joanna is a popular gift shop selling ceramics, bowls and checkered plates.

TO DRINK + DANCE

Nama BarJust as you acclimatize the surreal charms of Deià, Nama Bar takes it to another level. Opened in July 2017, this cocktail bar was designed by the famous British designer Matthew Williamson, who lives part-time in the village. Crossing the threshold is like entering a whole new dimension; each table, cushion and chair is different, with Williamson's iconic prints injecting intense colors and coasters designed to play cards. The women's restroom is covered in a vibrant flamingo print and you will find many men nodding to get a glimpse of the already famous functionality. The same detail goes into cocktails. The bar is run by a Londoner who has lived on the island for 16 years and, although the menu is exciting enough, his skill means that you can order anything. Nama Bar is defined by both luxury and eccentricity. You'll likely end up being dragged into a conversation with a group of locals and expats and blowing up your entire budget - but it's an experience that goes beyond currency.

Sa Fonda

Ask the locals and you will learn that Sa Fonda looked like a mushroom of smoke hovering in the sky. On one floor of the main street in Deià, the terrace of this particular bar has a reputation which means that it is always lively. The nights in open microphone that attract Mossy and the Geldofs associated with a discreet aesthetic mean that well-known fashionistas can blend into the large crowd while live music floats on them. It is rumored that Sa Fonda was asked to calm down, so the wild child grew up. But old habits die hard; spirits are served generously and inexpensively and the atmosphere is always stellar. Everyone is welcome here, locals of all ages, expatriates and vacationers, which means there is a liberal spirit in the air and everyone gets along. A sign saying "silence is sexy" ironically hung on the main terrace shows the contrasts that make this bar vibrate. The old question remains: if you are not at Sa Fonda on a Saturday evening, are you even in Deià? Probably not.

Restaurant at La Residencia

If you want to do something for the view, the super rich setting of La Residencia is for you. The front terrace overlooks the mountains on one side and the sea on the other. Between the two, its impeccably cut gardens are dotted with flowers so vivid that they seem to have been touched up. With such spectacular views, you can expect a menu to match. A mix of classic and signature cocktails is perfect for an aperitif or lunch drink, but there is also a nice range of spirits, ports and cognacs that are better suited as a digestif after dinner. Look at the wine list and you will see that a large part of it was of local origin, with most of the bottles from Mallorca and mainland Spain.

Deia Events

The main event of the city is the international music festival Deià which takes place every summer between May and September through some of the most emblematic buildings of the village. It offers a range of different music concerts throughout the festival, from solo pianists to full orchestras.

Deia Beaches

From Deià, you can descend to Cala Deià, a small pebble beach located in a pretty cove where local artists still perpetuate the tradition of bare graves and long parties on weekends. There are two restaurants here, with fresh fish as a specialty although they are only open during the summer season.

Deià is definitely scenic, charming cobbled streets wind their way through the village, lined by delightful houses with natural stone façades that contribute to the village’s unique atmosphere. Deià has a chic and trendy bohemian air about it; therefore you will find many top class restaurants and the usual array of busy cafés and bars, like in all other villages on Mallorca.

Deià nestles between the sea and the majestic Tramuntana mountain range and is thus part of the Mallorcan landscape that was awarded the status of a World Heritage Site for its sheer beauty. The village merges culture, traditions and natural beauty wonderfully and offers its residents a cool laid-back way of life with a spectacular scenic backdrop.

What kind of properties can be found in Deià

Charming and traditional Mallorcan town houses for sale  are the make-up of the village. Some of the houses enjoy breath-taking views over the Med. whilst others offer views over the dramatic mountain range. Deià is not very big, it has fewer than 1000 actual inhabitants, therefore whenever a house comes onto the market for sale, a buyer is generally quickly found and prices are hardly negotiated.

Living in Deià

The village is famous for a very relaxed way of living, but not all residents belong to the rich and famous set, there are still many “ordinary” villagers who have discovered various different ways of earning a living. In previous times, Deià’s prosperity relied upon the cultivation of olives, citrus fruits, fishing and farming. The valleys in Deià’s surroundings are filled with aromatic citrus fruit trees that perfume the air in the village. Nowadays, the clever locals have discovered that art and crafts provide earning possibilities and, of course, the relaxed agro-tourism that holidays-makers are increasingly turning to as an alternative to the standard package holidays. Deià is a small village, so never will there be any form of mass-tourism, or coach trips, these are naturally stopped by the limited space.

Deià’s uniqueness

Never to be crowded by tourists milling around, once you settle here in your house for sale in Deià and wander around the village, you will realise how inspirational this quaint and charming gem on Mallorca can be to life. It is a paradise for buyers of a property in Mallorca who appreciate the authenticity of the island and wish to connect with local life and its heritage. See Museum Monestir Miramar Not matter how small Deià may be, it does occasionally offer international excitement, be it that celebrities are out and about daily, or when TV and film crews are in town. They have found the variety of scenery to be an inspirational back-drop for their latest productions. Locals regularly comment that a lot of visitors ask where the restaurant is, that featured in the famous “The Night Manager” production!
