Contact UsSantanyi is a small municipal town which enjoys its own quiet existence away from the heavily loaded areas found elsewhere on Mallorca. Located in the isolated south-eastern tip of the island, Santanyi has 3,379 inhabitants (2008). Although by no means excessive, this number gives birth to an active community in which is otherwise a peaceful region of rural Mallorca.
Surprisingly enough, the municipality itself is not one of the smallest on the island and is medium in size with a total area of 124 km2. The cities of Alqueria Blanca, Calonge and Cala d´Or are also defined in these parameters.
With a municipal population of only 12,303 people, a corresponding population density of only 98 people per km2 is indicative of a sparsely populated region where much of Mallorca's natural appeal remains intact.
Since much of Santanyi has been spared the mass marketing that has swept through Mallorca in recent decades, the visitor may well expect the city to be rather cut off from all forms of unrest that exist elsewhere.
The surrounding environment, the light and the atmosphere of the city seem to be made for creative people and have attracted many international artists over the years. Today art seems to play a central role, and you can find many types of galleries and workshops in the narrow alleys of this peaceful country town.
The locals know each other well and like to stop to chat with their neighbors. Visitors like to watch the daily routine while sipping a café con leche or a glass of wine on one of the many terraces in the square.
You don't have to look far to see traces of Santanyi’s past suffering from pirates. The fortified city wall and Porta Murada (gate) still symbolize the fear of past generations in the face of the constant threat of pirate attacks afflicting their city. The Moorish invasions got so bad in Santanyí that many people slept in the city's locked church.
Take a trip to nearby Cala Llonga and you'll see the remains of an 18th-century fort built to repel invasions, with embrasures used to house cannons. Several defense towers are located along the coast, including the Torre d´en Beu, in Cala Figuera.
The town's original name, Santi Annini, means "Lamb of God", the symbol of which can be seen in the church and the coat of arms of Santanyí.
Whether for the scenery, curiosity or interest in art, Santanyí is well worth a visit and the best time to go is on weekends. Saturday is market day in Santanyí, so it's best to start early. Enjoy breakfast in one of the cafes and watch the continual comings and goings at one of the most beautiful markets on the island. Take a look at the galleries or stroll through the market stalls with their wide selection of curiosities.
You should plan an early dinner at one of the excellent restaurants in Santanyí and not miss the live music at Sa Cova (starts around 9:30 am). If you are lucky, the owner Juan will join the group and play the guitar; whatever, it will be an unforgettable night.
A great way to spend Sunday is a boat trip to the Cabrera Natural Park. The island is famous for its beauty, rare species and wildlife, and the crystal clear waters are a paradise for divers. The day trip can be booked directly in the port of Colonia Sant Jordi, with boats leaving at 9:30 am. Don't forget your picnic basket as you will have all day for walks, sunbathing or snorkeling.
The boats are back in Colonia Sant Jordi around 5:00 p.m. - a good time to end the weekend in one of the bars on the new marina promenade with a cool sunset and the best views of the harbor. Enjoy!
There are many galleries and art workshops in Santanyí, and a stroll through the side streets is well worth it if you're looking for that special work of art or decorative item for your home.
If you are looking for interior design, then Galería Barceló’s designed handcraft furniture using quality materials. Their store mixes a multitude of styles influenced by cultures from around the world, making it the island's favorite place for an original and imaginative design.

For shopping in a fun boutique, head to Plaza Mayor, home to Italian designer fashion store Es Center and Cult, which showcases young fashion and jeans designers.
The view of Flor de Sal products from Es Trenc, in their eye-catching cans, is omnipresent on the island. This wonderful natural gastronomic ingredient is harvested just up the road, in the saltworks of Es Trenc. Foodies and gift buyers will love the official Flor de Sal store, also in the main square.
