Fornalutx prides itself on its reputation as being the most attractive village in the whole of Majorca. As soon as you enter Fornalutx you are blown away by the sheer beauty of the place. Fornalutx’s pretty, pedestrianised cobbled streets make the village a magnet for British ex-pats who flock here year after year looking to buy a property, particularly as the nearby hiking routes of the Tramuntana Mountains provide a major attraction.

Everything appears to be in miniature in Fornalutx. The tiny main square of Placa d’Espana with its laid back cafes, the local bakery, the seventeenth century defence tower now used as the ayuntamiento (town hall), the ancient stone washhouse…it really is a breathtakingly beautiful place.

However, even though Fornalutx itself is relatively small, you are never short of a bar, restaurant, shop or bank. A lovely place to stay is the Fornalutx Petit Hotel. Originally a convent, the hotel has been transformed into an achingly cool boutique hotel with swimming pool; its private terrace offering splendid views over the Tramuntana Mountain range. A very pleasant place to eat is the traditional Restaurant Es Turo (971 630 808), especially if you dine al fresco on the terrace.

Every year in early September, Fornalutx comes to life with the fiesta of its patron saint. Known as the ‘Nativity of the Mother of God’, with much singing, dancing and partying, this particular fiesta is famous all over Mallorca. Fornalutx has been made much more accessible in recent years due to the construction of the Palma-Soller tunnel. This means Palma and its international airport  40 kilometres away are in easy reach via good major roads.
