History and Culture
Santanyí’s roots have been traced to 1300 A.D., when the town received its charter. But, like many Majorcan towns, archaeological finds hint that settlements in Santanyí could date back to Roman times. The town’s medieval walls were built in the 14th century to protect against pirate attacks, while its tower was added in the 16th century.
Santanyí’s Church of Sant Andreu was consecrated in the 10th century before being later renovated in a gothic style. The church has a baroque organ, reportedly brought to Santanyí from a convent in Palma.
Things to Do
Santanyí has a wonderful market that opens on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. People flock from surrounding areas to explore stalls which sprawl along several charming streets. The market is lively and savvy customers can find local and international items for sale. In busy periods, it can be best to park a little away from the market to ensure a spot.
