Moving to Mallorca is an exciting new chapter in your life, and Balearic Properties can help you get started with dream properties, advice and after sales services.

If you’re thinking about relocating to Mallorca then you’ve come to the right place. Mallorca is a dream island in the Mediterranean with beautiful beaches, historic old towns, luxury marinas and a great quality of life for you and your family. As well as finding a new home, you will also need to set up things like bank accounts, utility services and know where to find everyday necessities. Balearic Properties is here to help. To start off, here’s 5 things to consider when moving to Mallorca.

1. Do you want to buy or rent property in Mallorca?

2. You will need an NIE foreign identity number

As a foreigner moving to Mallorca, the most important document is your NIE number. You will need this document for a number of things, such as renting or buying property in Spain, registering for utility services, buying a car or opening up a bank account. Your NIE number also acts as a tax identification number, used in all fiscal transactions. You can choose a lawyer or gestoría (legal office) to apply for your NIE and deal with all your administrative bureaucracy on your behalf.

3. Registering for utility services

Once you’ve found your new home in Mallorca, you will also need to register for utility services such as gas, water, electricity and internet. Again, you will need the above mentioned NIE number to sign up to these local services. For many foreigners moving to Mallorca, this is perhaps the most daunting and time-consuming process, especially if you’re not fluent in Spanish. Balearic Properties is here to help clients with valuable after sales services, including transfer of utilities.

4. Buying new furniture or moving furniture?

Naturally you might want to bring over personal belongings when moving to Mallorca. However, you also have the option to buy new furniture in Mallorca from a number of stores. Alternatively, there are also many options at IKEA Mallorca, especially if you’re using a moving company which will take considerable time to arrive from mainland Europe. The local go-to department store in Spain is El Corte Inglés, with two in Palma, on Avenida Jaime III and Avendia Alexandre Rosselló.

5. Bringing your car from abroad or buying a new car in Mallorca

There are a number of ways to get your car to Mallorca by ferry from either Barcelona or Valencia. When taking your foreign car to Mallorca you need to consider that you can only keep your foreign car in Spain for up to six months before having to legally change it to Spanish plates. If you are a registered resident, then you have only one month to change your license plate. If you’re thinking about buying a car when moving to Mallorca, you will need your NIE to purchase a car in Spain.
