What are the best areas in Palma de Mallorca?

Backed by distant mountains and bathed in the Mediterranean sun, Palma, the capital of Mallorca, is a truly beautiful place to visit. There’s a great selection of property for you to choose from including apartments, villas and even buildings in the old town.

All of Palma’s landmarks are within a few minutes walking distance from your future apartment or historic property in the old town.

The flag-bearing town hall and an 800-year-old olive tree are on the hotel’s doorstep, and the Arabic Baths’ well-preserved Moorish hammam rooms and lush lemon-scented gardens (+34 971 72 15 49) are five minutes’ walk away, on Calle Can Serra. From there, Palma Cathedral which is studded with Gothic gargoyles (+34 902 02 24 45) is a five-minute stroll. Be sure to stop by the waterfront, the ultimate boys’ toys, namely helicopters teetering atop mega yachts, are quite a sight to behold. Beautiful Balearic beaches are just a 30-minute walk away from the hotel; best choose Portixol’s golden sand to avoid the crowds on the popular Ca’n Pere Antoni beach, or relax on a mod lounger at the glamorous Anima Beach Club (+34 971 59 55 91), a 15-minute walk away.

Local restaurants

Treat yourself to spicy albondigas (meatballs), heaped platters of chorizo and manchego, and plump prawns at the bar of the trendy tapas restaurant Taberna de La Bovéda (+34 971 72 00 26) – a six-minute walk from the hotel – or book a table for whole grilled fish and hearty portions of suckling pig. Red curtains, honey-coloured stone walls and a black bar decorated with cured hams at La Bodeguilla (+34 971 71 82 74) create an intimate and authentic setting for feasting on a menu, that changes weekly and which includes home-made truffles and grilled fish with stacks of vegetables fresh from the market.

Local bars

Spend a sophisticated evening sipping a champagne cocktail to a soundtrack of moody and melodic live jazz at Blue Jazz Club (+34 971 71 19 02), a popular bar on the roof terrace of the Saratoga Hotel. The bijou open-air terrace doesn’t allow for much elbow room, but it’s worth jostling fellow revellers for sensational night-time views of Palma.

Local cafés

The chic café terrace in the Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (+34 971 90 82 00) has avant-garde works of art to muse over while you dine on modernist Mallorquin cuisine: grilled fish topped with tombet (a traditional potato dish) and crystallised chillies, cream of artichoke soup with ibérico ham and stewed apple cake with Szechuan-pepper ice cream.

Local tours

A great way to start your property search in Palma is with a city sightseeing tour to discover all the great things you can do and see  in Palma’s best corners. Relax in shady gardens, populated by fountains and soak in the history. Hop onto an open-top double-decker bus at Castell de Bellver and wander through the courtyard, castle and surrounding areas. Take in breath-taking views of the city from this elevated point and look over the Cathedral, sea and the Port of Palma.

Cathedral

The masterpiece of the fantastic architecture in Palma has to be its Gothic cathedral known as La Seu. The Roman Catholic Cathedral is built on the site of a pre-existing mosque. The cathedral has a spectacular interior with many of its features designed by Antoni Gaudí. The cathedral perhaps looks most impressive seen from the outside, as it towers over the city’s sun baked sea wall.

Cruises

You’ll definitely want to explore the beautiful Mediterranean sea that surrounds Palma and the best way to do it is to go on a catamaran cruise. The boats usually have on-board bars so you can grab a drink and sunbathe on deck as the boat glides along. If you want to take a dip yourself, the boats drop anchor in some excellent locations where you can do a bit of swimming or snorkelling. The boats also offer delicious buffet lunches with grilled meat, salads and, of course, sangria.

Galleries and museums

Palma has a unique collection of museums and art galleries for you to explore. A great gallery to visit is Es Baluard which houses a wonderful collection of contemporary and modern art. The gallery’s permanent collection includes works by Miró, Barcelo and even Picasso.

Once you’ve finished in the gallery you should head to the Palau March Museum which was formerly one of the residences of the March family. Today, the museum has an outstanding collection of works by artists such as Auguste Rodin and Henry Moore. The museum is also home to a fantastic collection of nautical maps from the 15th century.
