What are you looking for?

Genova is a lovely little town just a few kilometres from the centre of Palma, the island's capital. Although delightful to visit, Genova is not really a tourist destination, rather more a residential place popular with people looking to buy a property in Mallorca in a tranquil area away from the bustling coastline.

Location
Genova, Mallorca

Whether as a holiday home or for living here all year round, Genova really does deliver that authentic Mallorcan laid-back ambience. The resident community here is international and, being close-knit, they look after each other. There are also several good international schools nearby.

Genova's lofty elevation at the foot of the Naburguesa mountain range allows residents who choose to buy a home here to enjoy the most spectacular views overlooking the capital and the sparkling Bay of Palma.

One of the major advantages of Genova is that it is so close to the centre of Palma, one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Just a few minutes drive away (or a short ride by bus), and there you are in the capital where you can enjoy a magnificent variety of shops, boutiques, restaurants, cafes and bars.

Surrounded by pine forests, Genova's narrow streets and traditional terracotta-roofed houses remind you that it was once just a small Mallorcan village. The town is also just off the major motorway which goes around Palma, and is thus incredibly easy to access from Palma International Airport.

A little history

Genova's 'history' actually goes back to pre-history! The town boasts its own underground cave system (the smallest in Mallorca) and it was here that ancient peoples made their homes.

Major attractions

Even though nowadays regarded as a suburb of Palma, Genova has, and always has had, its own individual village-like identity and atmosphere.

The town has several renowned restaurants where you can enjoy a relaxing meal. A particularly good example is Es Reco de Genova. The restaurant specialises in Mallorcan dishes and you can enjoy lovely views over the village.

Also, make sure you have Restaurante Na Burguesa on your 'to do' list when visiting Genova. Situated on top of a steep hill, it's famous throughout the island as a wonderful place for a romantic meal while taking in the specatular views over the city and Bay of Palma.

Like all traditional Mallorcan towns, Genova also has its own ancient church, San Salvador named after the town's patron saint. Every August the town comes to life to celebrate its favourite saint.

Genova's caves

In addition to the imposing church and various restaurants, the 'Cuevas de Genova' are well worth a visit. Discovered by accident in 1906, the caves provide a beautiful array of subterranean galleries, impressive columns, huge domes and pools of water, all illuminated for best effect. Small groups are taken on a walking tour by a personal guide.

The Caves of Genova are open throughout the year, there is free parking if coming by car, and visitors can enjoy an interesting audiovisual show that tells the full story.

There is also a stylish restaurant specialising in Mallorcan and Mediterranean cuisine. The caves of Genova really are great for a family day out, particularly as a way to cool down from the hot Mallorcan sun in the summer months.

Around Genova

The most obvious benefit of Genova's location is its proximity to Palma, one of the world's most admired cities. Le Seu, Palma's majestic gothic cathedral is an absolute must on anyone's itinery. The port of Palma is just a short distance away if you fancy hopping over by boat to Ibiza or Barcelona. There is a cinema that shows the latest English-language films. And the shopping and restaurant scenes are second to none. You don't even have to worry about parking in the city as there is a regular bus service from Genova.

But it's not just the capital that beckons nearby. Bellver Castle (the only circular catle in the whole of Spain) and the Royal Palace of Marivent are star attractions locally.

There are some fabulous beaches nearby too, in particular Illetas and Cala Major. Port Cala Nova is a lovely place to enjoy a meal whilst staring lovingly at the ocean yachts moored in the marina. If golf's your game, the local course to head for is undoubtedly the upscale Golf Son Vida.
