Mallorca is a Paradise – Now it’s official!!

We can be very proud of our island and all the efforts to make Mallorca an even more desirable destination for beach and sea lovers have been given a huge seal of approval.

Whilst we at Balearic Properties and our property owners have always known that our gorgeous island is a paradise, now the rest of Europe is the wiser!

The Balearic Islands now boast the most Blue Flag beaches and marinas here in Spain and most of them are on Mallorca! The Blue Flag is an international symbol of quality and is one of the most well-known environmental symbols worldwide. It has been awarded since 1987 to beaches and marinas meeting the strict requirements of the programme.

In order to receive a Blue Flag label, a beach does not only have to have an excellent quality of bathing water, it must also comply with a further 32 criteria concerning cleanliness, environmental management and organisation, environmental education and information, visitor safety and services, as well as protection of nature, the coast and the coastal area.

The programme has been run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which is based in Copenhagen and has 63 members worldwide. This year, the Blue Flag, which is a voluntary eco-label has been awarded to beaches and marinas in 48 countries.

The total number of Blue Flags awarded to the Balearic Islands is 85 and we are delighted that our beloved Puerto Pollensa now may also proudly fly this coveted flag. Now both of the international marinas here in the north of Mallorca have had their ecological efforts rewarded, Puerto Alcúdia having flown the flag for some years.

Spain as a whole even beat off all competition and was awarded the highest number ever in the history of the programme and ranks first worldwide!

On Mallorca, the news was welcomed by the local tourism authorities because the flags not only recognise the hard work carried out by the local councils but are also a globally recognised symbol which will definitely help boost the island’s image.
