Upcoming Classical and Jazz Festivals in Majorca
Historically chosen by artists and intellectuals as a refuge to get isolated and inspired, the island of Mallorca has a cultural Heritage of great interest for both inhabitants and visitors. Among the countless activities scheduled throughout the year, two upcoming music festivals in the northern part are to be mentioned.
Since its inception in 1995, Sa Pobla has been the first destination for jazz lovers. Top-notch musicians such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Marcus Miller, Kyle Eastwood, John Zorn or Dave Douglas performed in previous editions of this event. The 19th of Majorca Jazz Festival Sa Pobla returns with a seriesof concerts and related activities over five days, beginning on Tuesday 6th of August.
The Plaça Major of Sa Pobla will be the scene of this year’s edition opened with the Majorcan band Saxophobia Funk Project followed by Aruán Ortiz, Joachim Kühn and Dan Fox. Finally, the closing of the festival falls to the end-of-seminar concert on Saturday 10th August. The drummer and composer Jimmy Weinstein is once again co-ordinator of the five-day course 8th International Jazz Seminar with the Travelling School.
Last but not least, the experienced Music Festival of Pollença comes to its 52nd edition this summer. Not only music is the focus, but also other artistic expressions such as cinema, literature and plastic arts are part of this eclectic festival. Next Saturday 10th of August, Ara Malikian and La Orquesta en el Tejado will perform works by Bach, Mozart and Piazzolla, inaugurating the series of concerts. On different dates, The World Orchestra will accompany musicians like the flamenco singer Ginesa Ortega, the conductor Josep Vicent or the String Quartet, interpreting Beethoven, Falla or Michael Nyman. Finally, regarding other relevant facets of the Festival of Pollença, the outstanding Amparo Sard exhibits her Shady landscape in the cloister of Sant Domingo Convent until 15th September.
