La Patrona in Pollensa: A Festival of Tradition and culture

The Fiestas de la Patrona in Pollença

The Fiestas de la Patrona in Pollença is one of the most emblematic festivities in Mallorca, celebrated every year on August 2nd in honor of the Virgin of the Angels. This major festival, rooted in the 16th century, is a vibrant showcase of Pollença's history, culture, and traditions.

The Beginning of the Festivities

Since 1970, the celebrations have begun with the traditional proclamation at the Cloister of Sant Domingo. This event marks the start of a series of civic and religious activities that attract both locals and visitors. Among these events, the traditional "alborada" stands out, a melody first performed in 1882 by Nicolás de Castro. The "alborada" is a hymn that echoes through the streets of Pollença, waking the inhabitants and setting a festive tone.

The Dance of the Lady and the "Cossiers"

Another important event of the Patron Saint festival is the dance of the Lady and the "Cossiers". This traditional dance was revived in 1981  after having been forgotten for 71 years. Originally, the "Cossiers" danced for Saint Peter, but since their revival, they have been incorporated into the Patron Saint festivities. This dance is a symbolic representation of the struggle between good and evil and has become an indispensable element of the celebrations.

The Mock Battle of Moors and Christians

The most important and characteristic event of the Patron Saint festival is undoubtedly the Mock Battle of Moors and Christians. This theatrical representation commemorates the victory of the people of Pollença (Christians) over the corsairs (Moors) led by Dragut, who attacked Pollença on the night of May 30th to 31st, 1550. The first documented mention of the Mock Battle dates back to 1860, although it is believed to have started a few years earlier.

The action of the Mock Battle begins in the Plaza de l'Almoina, at the Font del Gall, with the meeting of the leaders of both sides: Joan Mas, representing the people of Pollença, and Dragut along with his lieutenant, a renegade native of Pollença, representing the Moors. At seven in the evening, Joan Mas invokes the Virgin of the Angels, and an impressive clash between the two groups of combatants ensues. This initial confrontation gives great originality and excitement to the Mock Battle.

Development of the Battle

The battle gradually moves along Calle Major, and upon reaching Can Nogués, the old council, the ancient University with the royal mayor, join in to support the Christians. Another significant battle takes place in front of the church of Sant Jordi, where the Christians use cannons to defend themselves against the corsairs. This confrontation symbolizes the liberation of captives and the defense of the town against the invaders.

The Mock Battle culminates in the field of Can Escarrinxo, on the outskirts of the town towards Port de Pollença. After three battles, the Christians manage to capture the corsair flag. The victors then proceed to the Parish Church to sing a "Te Deum" in thanksgiving for the victory, traditionally the one by Mossèn Miquel Tortell. In the temple, the hymn "Puig Patrona" by Costa i Llobera is also sung in honor of the Virgin of the Angels.

Election of the Mock Battle Characters

Since 1988, the main roles of the Mock Battle have been chosen by popular vote in the early weeks of July. This democratic process allows the community to actively participate in organizing the festival, ensuring that the representative characters truly symbolize the spirit of Pollença.

Conclusion

Las fiestas de La Patrona of Pollença is not just a religious celebration but also a manifestation of the town's identity and culture. Through its traditional events, such as the proclamation, the "alborada," the dance of the Lady and the "Cossiers," and the Mock Battle of Moors and Christians, the community of Pollença honors its history and keeps its traditions alive. This festival is a testament to the collective spirit and devotion of the people of Pollença and continues to be an eagerly anticipated and celebrated event year after year.
