Mallorca, a luxurious site for international sports competitions

The celebration of the third edition of the Thomas Cook Ironman 70.3, which has brought together more than twenty thousand spectators from the north of the island, shows that Mallorca is one of the most appreciated places when organising sports events.

A placid competitive atmosphere, a pleasant climate and the exceptional landscapes increase year by year the demand of participants. Most of them are elitist professionals, who add value to this race, that marks the beginning of the european season.

In this edition, athletes from sixty seven different countries attended one of the great events that takes place in Mallorca, reaching a total of three thousand and hundred participants, eight hundred more than the last edition.

The strongest race

The Thomas Cook Ironman took place in Alcúdia. The one thousand and nine hundred swimming meters went over the harbour of the locality; the cycle race crossed ninety up and down kilometers among mountains, which dazzled the triathletes. At the end of the race, the run on foot went along the edge of the marvellous beach of Alcúdia, in a three-lap route, till completing the twenty one kilometers to reach the marina.

In this occasion, the winner of the most demanding triathlon has been a Spanish, Eneko Llanos (photography), who finished the route in 3h 52m 36s. This triumph allows him to participate in the Ironman’s WorldWide Championship, which will take place in September. In the female rate, the winner has been Lisa Hütthaler, with a time of 4h 24m and 25 s.

The big success of the Ironman shows that the binomial tourism-sport is achieving impulse in Mallorca and that, for its characteristics, the island is a consolidated place among athletes and cyclists not only as a good place for training but also for competitions.
