What are you looking for?

Settle into you recently purchased Island Home and make use of Mallorca’s excellent facilities

Once you have settled into you new island home, have you ever had the idea, to leave the car at home for a change and switch to public transport? No, it then you are like very many others who completely forget that Majorca’s public transport network is excellent! In our countries it's normal to jump onto the bus or train to get from A to B, but why not in Mallorca?

The bus network on Mallorca has been expanded a lot in recent years. Anyone wanting to use public transport can get to many places either by train or bus easily and cheaply on top! Detailed timetables are to be found on various websites.

However, secluded beaches or idyllic look-out points in the mountains on Mallorca are still very hard to reach by public transport. But if you are moving to and fro’ between villages and coastline, or between the resorts of the island, as a passenger you have an extensive network of buses and trains at your disposal, with departures more or less every minute and at relatively attractive prices.

It must be granted though that Mallorca invested late in the public transport network, but a lot has happened in the past six years. In addition there is a great pricing policy which allows the various transport services to coordinate with each other: with the "Tarjeta Intermodal" for example you can use the bus, train, metro and in Manacor, Inca and Palma even the use of public bicycles are included in the fare. The Tarjeta is available to any inhabitant of the island; the price depends on for how many of the five zones on the island the card is to be used.

Comprehensive information regarding schedules and routes can be found on the Balearic Ministry of Environment and Transport website, www.caib.es - see also below.

Likewise, the lines and zones here have a system: all 100 buses serve the southwest of the island, the 200 cover the Tramuntana, the 300 the “Pla” central area, the 400 east of the island and the 500 lines service the south of Majorca. With the help of Google Maps and the schedules of the transport companies, their departure and arrival times, various transportation options by train or bus, as well as the duration of the routes are all specified.

If you're traveling by bike, you must be aware of the fact that buses categorically do not transport bikes. The train from Palma to Manacor, however, which also offers connections to Llubí, Muro and Sa Pobla from Inca, allows for bikes on some of the train rides, these are specially marked in the railway schedules.

Since 2007, good investments have been made in Palmas public transport system. Modern buses are now part of the EMT fleet, which operates more than 30 routes in Palma. For residents of Palma a bus ride is fairly cheap: children and adolescents under 17 years travel free, as well as owners of the "Carnet Gran A". A single ticket costs 1.25 Euros, and holders of "Tarjeta Ciudadana" pay between 15 and 65 cents, depending on age (pensioners) or the number of children in the family.

Detailed information for the passengers about all connections and schedules of the individual lines can be found on the site www.emtpalma.es. Also information about the night bus "Bus de Nit", about the sightseeing bus in Palma and the tourist train at the beach can be found here
