Mallorca Real Estate Market

Mallorca has become the place to own a property for people, who still pursue careers but also for elderly people living here who enjoy being able to hop home quickly.

Mallorca – the Island in Spain

Mallorca is a magnet. The largest Balearic island attracts property buyers from all over the worl and this is why: Kings, Artists, Pop- and Filmstars, Tourists, Expats and such who wish to „make it“ here. No place in the Meditteranean is more diverse or transformable. Previously, in the early days of tourism, the island was snubbed as the „mass tourism scene“, the island has transformed its image, it has developed a multi-cultural Cosmos with an excellent infra-structure, top-of-the-range gastronomy, without, however, losing its most precious asset: its overwhelmingly beautiful natural scenery.

Mallorca's Nature

Mallorca’s nature is even more versitile than on other Mediterranean islands. In the north, the huge double-bay Pollensa-Alcudia embraces the Formentor peninsula, the Isla de la Victoria, the nature resevoir s'Albufera and the beautiful, historic towns of Pollensa and Alcúdia. To the east, down from the enchanting hills of the Serra de Llevant many country lanes lead to fjord-like, picturesque sandy coves, beaches and marinas. The hot and flat southern areas with natural sandy dunes, pine groves and salt lakes bear a resemblance to the neighbouring island Ibiza. Last but by no means least Mallorca’s non-plus-ultra: the Wild, Wild West with its massive mountain range the Serra de Tramuntana with sheer breathtaking scenery and what has to be one of the most exciting and impressive Dream-Routes in Europa – forget Route 66!! By no means forget Mallorca’s centre, es Pla, a plateau home to some quite sleepy villages, the island’s granary and vegetable garden. And then there is the island’s capital Palma, one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean, where history is preserved and blends in with new creations, a city that reinvents itsself 24 hours a day – museums laden with 3000 year old island history; trendy yoga- and spa-centres, new-fashion-shops or chocolate-, cheese– and wineboutiques.

Beaches in Mallorca

More than 150 sandy beaches surround the island and give access to the sea, which is proven to be the cleanest in the whole of the Mediterranean. There is hardly a beach in Mallorca that does not proudly fly the coveted Blue Flag.

Attractions in Mallorca

Mallorca has and offers it all – well perhaps no snow-skiing!! More than 40 Yachtmarinas all around the island, an abundance of sailing-, surf- and diving stations, kite-centres, 23 magnificent golf courses, tennisschools, equestrian schools, hundreds of hiking- und cycling routes, covering all possible events in Mallorca indeed even a hot-air-balloon station.

Getting There

A 2 to 3 hour flight away from the UK, the island has become the place to own a second residence for people, who still pursue careers but also for elderly people living here who enjoy being able to hop home quickly. The locals are famous for their discreet friendliness and tolerance which foreign visitors and ex-pats alike appreciate. After numerous invasions by the Romans, Vandals, Arabs, Pirates and „tourists“, the Mallorcans have become accustomed to foreigners. They maintain their traditions, such as the Mallorquin dialect (of the Catalan language) but they also allow foreigners to participate in their customs and way of living - so for example in the numerous village fiestas which are celebrated throughout the year. An island, which predominantly depends upon tourism, must redevelop continuously, must permanently improve the infra-structure and adapt to new technolgies. The young island generation embraces these ideas, moves with the times – to the advantage and delight of each visitor to Mallorca.

Palma de Mallorca – the Island Capital

The island capital Palma reinvents itsself daily! The waiters send their orders to the bar from 7am until 3pm, they wind their way through overbrimming terraces, and attend their clients with swift routine: business people, housewives, kids, politicians, tourists, residents, celebs and eccentrics. They are all acting on an open-air stage, framed by a majestic, historic backdrop of awe-inspiring architecture, culminating in the Cathedral that dominates the Port by almost heavenly dimensions. When the sun rises behind it to ring in the new day, the bartering of the fishermen and traders in the auction halls near the port begins, their wiggling haul will soon be sold by the plump market women in more than 70 stalls in the indoor markets downtown, bright red Gambas, intimidating „Seadevils“, Doradas that shimmer like silver.

Palma might lack something monumental. This is not exactly a museum city, although it boasts more than a dozen museums which are well worth a visit. Palma is a vivacious, a very humane city. Unabashedly ignoring sophisticated arts, banks and boutiques, newspaperstalls and shoe shops, cafés and restaurants have installed themselves in the renaissance palaces of the aristocrats or in the splendid art nouveau buildings.

Conserve old and at the same time create new – the city masters this art. On one hand companies celebrate 100 years in business, on the other hotels dating back to the 1900s shed their skin and transform themselves into ultra-modern, 5 star luxury hotels named „Gran Lujo“, with noble suites, personal butlers, and top-of-the-range wellness und spa facilities. Trendy boutiques occupy old houses, and former antigue / bric and brac shops become tatoo- and piercing studios. In between this development reknown addresses stand their ground, the attractive backeries maintain their original art-deco style, art galleries, antique dealers or the shops laden with delicious, mallorcan specialities in the old part of the city. The bustling stairs-quarters connects the narrow alleys in the more than 2000 year old upper city with the busy, modern lower city with its majestic ramblas and boulevards lined with proud palm trees.

After midday, the shutters are let down to announce the prolonged midday-break and that is when the numerous cafés and restaurants take over the scene in a big way. The selection is enormous, from the simple tapabar to the star-crowned luxury restaurant with views over the port, simple to ultra chic. The stage comprises neon-lit bars, romantic patios laden with flowers, breezy terrasses with sea views or quaint cellars with a long history.

Palma does not need a movie director. The city has over 400.000 participants and stages itsself. Above all the grande finale, the night life. Spotlights light up the Cathedral, Almudaina Palace and the mighty palm trees on the Paseo Marítimo – the promise of 1000 and one nights! The stage is set for night events and numerous night clubs. The night owl is lost for choice, hot and garish or elegant and noble. Palmas night life is phenomenal, hard to top and merits – likewise the whole city – a huge round of applause.

Palma bows to the applause and thanks the visitor with an encore. With the Belver Palace, high above the city, mystically illuminated, a medieval castle with the promise: not sometime soon but see you again tomorrow in

Property in Mallorca

The real estate market is different than the mainland of Spain, in Mallorca you can hardly find similar distressed sales like for example in Murcia, and it has become an important focus for property investors in the last years, now even stronger than before. Below is a selection of properties for sale in Palma , where areas like Santa Catalina have become extremely popular by Skandinavian buyers.
